SAN DIEGO - Freer High School student’s speech on making a difference in the world won the Rotary’s Four-Way Test Speech Contest on Sunday afternoon.
Eric Massey is headed to the district contest on April 21 at South Padre Island. He also won a $300 scholarship for winning first place.
The other two contestants were Alice High School student Rose Torres and San Diego High School student Kayla Castillo.
Torres was the second place winner which comes with a $200 scholarship. Third place and a $150 scholarship was Castillo.
Participants had five to seven minutes to present a speech in a certain topic that answers four questions - Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concern?
After the students gave their speeches, the judges got together and announced the winners.
The purpose of the contest is to help youth, Rotarians and the community at-large to completely understand, encourage, and foster the principles of Rotary and its motto of “Service Above Self.”
